The leadership of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has issued a strongly worded warning over what it describes as the self-centered political posture of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, which it believes could become the spark for a renewed wave of crisis in Warri Federal Constituency.

In a detailed statement signed by Comrade Nicholas Igarama, Chairman IYC Western Zone; Ebi Joshua Olowolayemo Esq., Secretary; and Comrade Tare Magbei, Information Officer, the IYC expressed “deep concern and utter dissatisfaction” over recent remarks credited to the Governor.

According to the council, one of the hallmarks of true, visionary leadership is the ability to put the collective interest of the people above personal ambition and partisan considerations. However, Governor Sheriff’s assertion that his votes in the 2027 general election matter more than the peace, lives, and properties of Warri Federal Constituency residents has been described as “unbecoming of a Chief Security Officer” and “an affront to the people of Warri.”

⚠️ A Looming Crisis in Warri

Warri, long seen as a flashpoint of inter-ethnic tension, is currently sitting on what the IYC described as “a precarious edge of possible relapse into crisis.” The council warned that rather than deploying mechanisms for peacebuilding and convening critical stakeholders to address grievances, the Governor appears fixated on his political future.

“The tension is palpable, the risks evident, yet rather than taking proactive steps to forestall conflict, the Governor appears fixated on the narrow prism of his political future,” the statement read.

The IYC accused the Governor of fostering a climate of impunity that emboldened the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area to allegedly conspire with elements of the Nigeria Police to dismantle publicity materials belonging to the Ogbe-Ijoh Warri Kingdom and its revered monarch.

Such provocative acts, the council warned, are capable of inflaming passions and sparking avoidable unrest across the area.

🛑 INEC Ward Delineation and the Threat to Peace

Particularly worrying to the IYC Western Zone is the Governor’s perceived stance on the ongoing INEC Ward Delineation Exercise, which the council says could further deepen divisions and ignite unrest if not handled with fairness and sensitivity.

“It is not misplaced to describe Governor Sheriff’s posture on the ongoing INEC Ward Delineation Exercise as a dangerous weapon capable of igniting crisis in Warri,” the statement continued.

✊ IYC’s Demands

The Ijaw Youth Council Western Zone called on Governor Oborevwori to:

  • Retract his controversial statement immediately.

  • Tender an unreserved public apology to all ethnic nationalities in Warri Federal Constituency.

  • Embrace his constitutional duty as the Chief Security Officer of Delta State.

  • Convene urgent dialogue sessions with critical stakeholders across all ethnic groups in Warri to prevent escalation of tension.

🔑 “Warri Cannot Be Sacrificed on the Altar of Personal Ambition”

The council insisted that the peace of Warri must remain non-negotiable and should not be traded for political calculations.

“Warri cannot and must not be sacrificed on the altar of personal ambition. The time to act is now, before words and inaction sow the seeds of avoidable conflict,” the statement concluded.
