In a strongly worded statement, Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi (PO), has addressed circulating images on social media falsely linking him to controversial meetings.

One of the photos purports to show Obi standing with former U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by a fabricated claim that Trump publicly praised him. Another widely circulated image allegedly depicts Obi with Lagos State transport boss MC Oluomo in his office.

Obi, however, minced no words in dismissing the images as fake and doctored.

“Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake and doctored, and the accompanying stories are entirely false. I have not met Mr Trump recently, nor have I had any such meeting with MC Oluomo,” Obi stated.

The Dangers of Disinformation

Obi stressed that these fabrications are not harmless internet jokes but dangerous tools of disinformation designed to mislead Nigerians, confuse the public, and distract from real issues.

“These fabrications highlight the persistent dangers of fake news and disinformation in our society. They are not only misleading but deliberately designed to confuse, misguide, and distract the public,” he warned.

The former governor called for greater public vigilance and encouraged Nigerians to verify information before sharing, reminding everyone that disinformation undermines truth, accountability, and democracy.

Commitment to Truth & Transparency

Obi reassured Nigerians that his political engagement remains anchored on integrity and transparency:

“For the avoidance of doubt, if I had such meetings, I would have personally made them public on my X handle. My politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity; it is about confronting the real problems of Nigeria and working towards solutions grounded in integrity, accountability, and transparency.”

He reiterated that his focus remains on tackling insecurity, strengthening the rule of law, improving education and healthcare, and pulling millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

“My politics is strictly focused on addressing the plight of the suffering Nigerians,” Obi emphasized, adding that he is committed to the vision that “A new Nigeria is POssible.”

Moral Lesson

This episode underscores the urgent need for Nigerians to become discerning consumers of information in an era where doctored images and fabricated narratives can spread like wildfire. It is a call to fact-check before forwarding, to seek truth rather than sensationalism, and to protect the integrity of public discourse.
